The winner of the Local Government Challenge 2026 was announced at the Local Government Association’s (LGA) annual conference in Bournemouth on Wednesday 8 July 2026.

After tackling five real-life challenges across the country, our four highest scoring contestants became finalists at LGA Annual Conference in Bournemouth competing for the coveted LG Challenge scholarship. Supported by their fellow cohort members, the finalists exhibited their project ideas to delegates and a judging panel (comprising representatives from the LGA, Stockport MBC as our challenge 3 host, and The MJ).

At our award ceremony, it was announced that Vic Lewis from Bolton Council was the winner with her project to help tackle the sector’s recruitment challenges focussing on campaigns, paid internships, ambassadors and mentoring. The award was hosted by Councillor Gareth Roberts, Leader of London Borough of Richmond-upon-Thames and presented by Councillor Eamonn O’Brien, LGA Chair and Leader of Bury Council.
