UVC Irradiation Treatment
Ultraviolet (UVC) irradiation is a proven technology to control viruses and bacteria in various industries and building environments. It is also a viable method to manage microorganisms growing on damp surfaces in historic buildings and to treat mould growth that may appear following a flood or other water damage (for example, after a fire).
There is no previous guidance on the use of UVC irradiation in cultural heritage. This document is the first to describe the potential benefits, limitations, and risks of UVC irradiation, as well as the necessary tools and methodologies to implement a treatment programme for inorganic materials (such as stone, brick, and ceramics). The appendices list examples of previous uses of UVC irradiation on historic buildings, and two case studies illustrate its benefits.
