Turning ambition into action: Decarbonising health and social care locally

Wednesday 16 September 2026, 10.00am-11.30am

Local authorities play a critical role in tackling the climate emergency, particularly through their influence across health and social care systems. As demand for services grow and pressures on budgets intensify, there is an increasing need to deliver sustainable, low-carbon care that improves outcomes for communities while reducing environmental impact.

Participants will hear from peers, share insights, and discuss challenges and enablers to driving change at a local level. The session will provide a valuable space to highlight on-the-ground delivery, with a focus on actionable solutions.

Co-benefits on decarbonisation include:

  • Lower costs: Reduced energy use and sustainable procurement cut long-term operating expenses.
  • Healthier buildings: Better insulation and ventilation improve comfort and reduce respiratory and cold-related illnesses, lowering NHS costs.
  • Reduced waste: Greater efficiency means fewer materials and less unnecessary spending.
  • Climate health protection: Decarbonisation lowers emissions, helping prevent heat illness, flood-related harm, and spread of diseases.
  • Less system pressure: Fewer extreme weather events reduce strain on health services and save NHS resources.
