Lili Pohlmann: “Why in the heart of London? Because it's the heart of the world. If not in London, then where? Apart from Poland and apart from Germany, of course. But it is very important for schools, for education, for young people, as you very well know. You know best how many schools are coming and were coming since the opening 20 years ago.

It's most important to teach about this. What happened. Because this is the future and the young people, they have to learn about all the horrors and about the good, also about the good that happened, the people who endangered their lives and their families and their everybody in order to save or to, to offer a piece of bread to somebody. This is what they have to learn and that's why it's extremely important. And I'm happy and delighted that there is such an exhibition, and I would love to have people like myself to put in as much as possible into it.”

Lili Pohlmann was a child when Germany invaded and occupied Poland.

With help from a German civil servant and a Ukrainian Archbishop, Lili and her mother Cecylia survived the Holocaust. However, her brother Uriel and father Filip died.

Lili worked to ensure the horrors of the Holocaust are not forgotten and that that the courage of those who offered help to Jewish people is remembered. She was one of the Holocaust survivors involved in IWM’s plans for constructing new Second World War and The Holocaust Galleries at IWM London.

The galleries draw heavily upon the unique personal stories that IWM’s collections contain to present a vivid narrative that reflects the realities of the Second World War, the Holocaust and the resulting impact upon the world.

Lili supported the new galleries and the involvement of survivors in their creation.
