The Wooden Wonder
Made from the lightest materials, powered by two Rolls-Royce Merlin engines, and capable of carrying a 4000lb bomb, the de Havilland Mosquito was fast, well-armed and one of the most versatile aircraft used in the Second World War.
Known as the “Wooden Wonder”, Mosquitos were the first multi-role combat aircraft. They excelled in reconnaissance, tactical strike, anti-submarine, coastal defence, pathfinder, bomber, night fighter and fighter-bomber operations. The Mosquito featured in this tour's final role was a target tug, helping train the pilots of early jet fighters.
During the Second World War, they infuriated Herman Goering, defied the Gestapo, assisted the Resistance, and had the lowest loss rate of any Bomber Command aircraft.
