Barbie doll by Mattel dressed as David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust, 2019. Plastic doll dressed in a costume modelled on David Bowie's metallic 'space suit', designed by Freddie Burretti for his character Ziggy Stardust. The doll is posed in the same hands on hip position that Bowie is in his famous photo in this costume by Masayoshi Sukita in 1973.
The costume is metallic silver, blue, and red striped trousers and long sleeved top, (designed to mimic the jumpsuit but in two pieces). There are pointed green and red striped shoulders, and a wide collar. The doll also wears platform red Kabuki style boots, as in the photograph it is referencing.
The doll has the addition of silver dangly star shaped earrings. It has slicked back, dark red hair fixed to the head, and black nail polish on the hands. The face has red lipstick and blue and red eye makeup painted on, and a gold circle in the centre of the forehead, as in Bowie's original costume.
The doll is tied to a cardboard base with plastic strips. The cardboard base and backdrop is red in colour, with various photographs of David Bowie by Brian Ward printed on it.
The plastic box is an irregular cuboid shape, with clear plastic front and sides, and a cardboard back.
The box has the official Bowie and Barbie logos on the front and back, and an image of the original Masayoshi Sukita photograph on the back.
