Papageorge began making pictures in New York’s Central Park in the 1970s. He experimented with a medium format camera, ungainly and impractical for city streets, which allowed him to create narrative compositions that suggest stories beyond the image frame. Papageorge’s photographs portray an urban paradise that contrasts with the urban strife prevalent in New York City at the time.
