An emerging infectious disease can either be a newly recognised infectious disease or a known disease with a reported incidence increasing over the past 20 years in a specific place, or among a specific population.
A zoonotic infection is a disease caused by pathogens (like viruses, bacteria, or parasites) transmitted from animals to humans, either directly (for example, through contact) or indirectly (for example, through vectors like mosquitoes).
Between 60% and 80% of emerging infections are derived from animal sources.
