You might need to get a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check for someone, for example: 

  • an employee (or their manager)
  • a volunteer 
  • someone who has contact with children

There are various types of DBS check available, depending on the role. 

You can also use this tool to find out if you need a DBS check for a role you’re applying for.

This tool is for organisations that are registered in England or Wales. There’s a different process for getting a check in Scotland or getting a check in Northern Ireland.
