Discover the South Downs

Removing barriers and supporting wellbeing, engagement and connection to nature

Discover the Downs offers school visits, giving children and young people meaningful time outdoors in the South Downs National Park.

Each visit is fully funded, includes up to £500 towards transport costs, delivered by experienced outdoor educators and shaped in partnership with schools. Sessions balance structured learning with time to explore, play and learn at a child‑led pace.

Activities can include:

  • Guided exploration of the South Downs National Park, exploring its landscapes, wildlife, history and special qualities
  • Hands‑on habitat and species investigations using simple field equipment
  • Nature connection games and sensory activities to support focus, calm and emotional wellbeing
  • Practical outdoor and bushcraft skills that build teamwork, confidence and resilience
  • Creative art and craft using natural materials

Locations

Visits take place at a range of sites across the South Downs National Park, including downland, woodland and coastal landscapes. Locations are selected to suit each group’s age, access needs and travel considerations.

Eligibility

Schools are eligible if 30% or more of pupils are eligible for Pupil Premium funding and pupils are aged 7–18.
