Tips and inspiration
- Not everyone is able to install solar panels or a heat pump at home but switching to a green energy tariff is an impactful way to show there’s demand for renewable energy. If you’re not the bill payer, why not have a conversation with the person who is and share the following tips and guidance with them?
- The energy you use at home comes from the National Grid, which is a mix of electricity produced using fossil fuels and renewable energy sources. Switching to a green energy tariff means your supplier will either buy up renewable energy to match your usage or invest in renewable energy projects such as wind or solar farms.
- Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin certificates, also known as REGOs, are like receipts that certify that electricity has come from renewable sources. But be aware that energy companies can buy them without actually adding new green energy to the grid. Try to choose tariffs from suppliers who invest in building new sources of renewable energy rather than just buying REGOs.
- Check out the Ethical Consumer website for further advice on choosing a green tariff and use comparison websites such as Go.Compare.

- Reducing your energy usage at home is important regardless of your tariff. Check out our energy-saving actions, including draught-proofing your home, switching to energy-efficient LED light bulbs and washing clothes in full loads and at a cooler temperature.

The big picture
In 2024, renewable energy generated more than 50% of the UK’s electricity for the first time.
