Jonathan Mills CB

Biography

Jonathan Mills is Director General Economy, International and Security at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ).

He is responsible for connecting energy security and resilience, economic growth, and international engagement. This strengthens DESNZ’s role as both an economic and national security department and improves alignment across these critical agendas.

Jonathan was previously DG Energy Markets and Supply in DESNZ and its predecessor the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). Before joining BEIS, Jonathan was DG for Labour Market Policy and Implementation at the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). He has also worked as a Senior Civil Servant in the Cabinet Office and in HM Treasury.

Director General, Economy, International and Security

The Director General is responsible for:

  • advancing UK energy diplomacy and clean energy trade
  • strengthening UK energy security and resilience
  • managing the transition of the North Sea energy sector
  • supporting clean energy investment and jobs, and industrial decarbonisation
  • leading international climate negotiations, finance and strategic partnerships
