Statement on Chișinău Declaration

Published: 15 May 2026

On 19 March, we published a joint statement on the application of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). We urged the UK government to make sure there is no reduction in rights protections.

We all want to be treated fairly. Human rights belong to everyone and help protect us all in our everyday lives.

We note the adoption of the Chișinău Declaration on the ECHR today. Through this declaration, the UK government has reaffirmed its commitment to the ECHR framework.

As the declaration makes clear, the ECHR framework enables governments to pursue legitimate aims – including managing borders and maintaining public safety – while maintaining a minimum level of protection and preventing torture and the most serious forms of ill-treatment.

We will continue to monitor developments closely, following this declaration. As a National Human Rights Institution, we will seek to ensure that human rights are protected, by advising the UK government on the implications of any steps it takes to implement the principles outlined in the declaration.
