Marvellous Moths
A group of insects that is often overlooked and given a bad reputation, moths are actually hugely diverse in their colours, patterns, and behaviours.
Most moth species are nocturnal so they have developed different ways to stay safe during the day when they are resting. Many have excellent camouflage abilities, allowing them to blend into tree trunks, leaves and even bird poo during the day!
Did you know? Over 2,500 species of moths have been recorded in Britain, and only two of them are responsible for the holes in your clothing! Compared to 59 species of butterfly, moths certainly win awards for variety.

Others use clever mimicry to warn predators off, like the hornet moth, while some rely on bright colours to confuse and startle, such as the elephant hawk moth.
