Risk factors

Risk factors are the result of behaviours or exposure to factors that increase the chance of developing a health condition

Health conditions

A health condition includes physical and mental illness or injury which may involve contact with healthcare services to diagnose, prevent, treat and manage the condition. This is known as a morbidity, and people with more than one illness are classed as having comorbidities,

Healthcare public health

Healthcare public health refers to preventing disease, prolonging life, and promoting health through the organisation and delivery of population-wide health services. Resources are categorised by community services, health checks and screening, primary care and secondary care (hospital care).

Life course

A life course approach considers the critical stages, transitions, and settings where large differences can be made in promoting or restoring health and wellbeing. This section includes resources related specifically to children and young people, older people and end of life. 

Public health themes

Other broad public health themes with relevant public health intelligence resources. Health inequalities cuts across all topics, but there are some specific health inequalities resources included here. Cross cutting refers to tools which cover a wide range of themes.

Wider determinants

The Wider Determinants of Health are the social, economic, environmental, and structural factors that affect health, well-being, and health inequalities. This includes topics such crime, education, employment, environment, transport, housing and homelessness, income and social connections and community assets. These are things which are outside of what we consider as health, but which have a big impact on the health of the population.
