Before you start

You need these to complete the application:

  • your MCS certificate number
Help Text Your MCS number is at the top of the certificate that your heating system installer gave you. If you do not have your certificate please contact your installer.
  • your Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) number
Help Text Your EPC number is the ‘Reference number’ at the top right of the certificate.
  • personal information and bank details
  • documentation to evidence your financial contributions towards the purchase or installation cost of the heating system

Things you can prepare:

  • if you need to be metered for payments please have your "Metering Questions" provided by your installer to hand
  • invoices stating both the cost of the system and labour to install (these will not affect payments or your eligibility)
  • we recommend you open our Application Form Help sheet while you complete the form
Your eligibility to receive payments depends on you supplying us with the correct information in this application (and it’s your legal responsibility to do so). This includes the correct first commissioning date for your system, found on your MCS certificate which you should have received after it was installed.

All parts of your renewable plant must have the same first commissioning date and the heat generating part of the equipment must not have been used before this date. For more information see relevant parts on our webpage.

We carry out audit checks to identify cases of non-compliance and suspected fraud. In such cases, we will seek to impose sanctions, such as recovering RHI payments or cancelling membership to the scheme.

Ofgem has a zero tolerance approach to fraud. Where we suspect that we’ve been given false information to fraudulently obtain RHI payments, we may inform the Police.

If you've come directly to this page, first make sure you have everything you need to apply. Check here before proceeding.

About you

About you

  • 1. Are you applying as:
Help Text Married couples and civil partnerships who do not represent an organisation should declare themselves as individuals.
  • 2. Do you own the heating system?
Help Text If you are applying with your spouse or civil partner you should declare yourself as a joint owner with at least one other individual. If you have a joint ownership agreement with a company or other organisation, you should declare yourself a joint owner with a company. Only select sole owner if there are no other individuals or organisations who share ownership of the renewable heating technology.
  • 3. Are you:
Help Text Please declare your connection to the property where the heating system is installed.
  • 4. Do you own or occupy the property where the heating system is installed?
Help Text If you are a private landlord and wish to apply for your own home that you live in, rather than one of your tenanted properties, please submit a separate application and declare yourself as an owner-occupier.

  • 5. Enter your MCS Installer Certificate Number:
Help Text Your MCS number is at the top of the certificate that your heating system installer gave you. If you do not have your certificate please contact your installer.
    MCS - -
    Example 12345678-H
  • 6. Does the heating technology you're applying for have more than one MCS certificate (e.g. Two Air Source Heat Pumps in one system)? A separate application must be made for Solar Thermal technologies.
Help Text If you have a solar thermal system for heating water (not solar PV) as well as a heat pump or biomass system at your property you must submit a separate application for each. If you have more than one MCS certificate for the same technology type and you answer yes to this question, then we will review your application and contact you.
  • 7. Have you or any previous owner used any of your own money to buy or install the renewable heating
    system?
Help Text Please answer to the best of your knowledge. Loans that you are liable to repay count as your own money.
  • 8. Was any money used from public grants, including the Green Home Grant Scheme (GHGS) or Renewable Heat Premium Payment (RHPP), to buy, install or reimburse you for the heating system?
Help Text Please answer this question using the knowledge of both you and any previous owners of the heating system or the relevant registered investor. Any funds previously received will be deducted from the Domestic RHI payments in order to avoid paying them twice (a double subsidy). If you are applying and nominating a registered investor to receive your RHI payments, please make sure you contact your nominated investor and check if they’ve received grant funding for your plant.
  • 9. What does your system provide heat for?
Help Text If you are unsure ask your installer. Or if you installed after the scheme opened check section 2 of the MCS Compliance Certificate they gave you. Space heating means domestic room heating such as radiators and underfloor heating. ‘Other purposes’ includes business use.
  • 10. Do you need to be metered for payment?
Help Text Some heating systems must be metered under scheme rules. Check yours. See our factsheet Do I Need Metering?

  • 12. In the last 12 months, tell us how long the property was occupied for:
Help Text To the best of your knowledge, please provide an answer relating to the last 12 months. If the property has been occupied for less than 183 days (roughly 6 months), your heating system needs to be metered. If you're a custom-builder and commissioned your system before you occupied the property, you don’t need to install meters as a result of occupying the property for less than 183 days in the last 12 months.
  • 13. What buildings are being heated by your heating system?
Help Text If your renewable heating technology provides heat to buildings covered by more than one domestic EPC, or where the secondary buildings are mainly occupied by other tenants, for example an annex or cottage which is being sub-let, please select ‘multiple properties’. If your technology provides heat to a main house and also related building(s), for example garages, outhouses or swimming pools without their own EPC, please select ‘Single Domestic property (Multiple Buildings)’.

  • 14. Please find the commissioning date on your MCS certificate. Did anyone live in the property either on, or at any point before, this date?

If it was commissioned before it was first occupied then you must answer 2 additional questions to see if you are eligible. This date is on your MCS certificate.
