Stories for Schools is a British Council Turkey project to provide students with high-quality English language short stories

The Guitar is a short story written by Sevim Ak, a popular Turkish writer of novels and short stories for children.

Set in an unknown Turkish city, the story tells about a boy whose dream is to be a great guitarist. The only problem is that he can’t play…or can he? Read about how one day in the park everything suddenly goes right for Alper.        

The Movember Foundation is a charity for men’s health. This lesson plan for teachers of adults and secondary students at CEFR Level B1 and above raises awareness of the charity. 

This lesson is based around the poem Exposure by the First World War poet Wilfred Owen. Exposure vividly depicts the experience of the soldiers on the front line of the trenches in the freezing winter of 1917. It provides students with practice in analysing poetry: identifying language features, finding examples in the text and discussing their responses to the poem. It also provides contextual and biographical information about the First World War and Wilfred Owen, including subject specific and historical vocabulary.
