Nuclear Restoration Services (NRS) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority responsible for safely decommissioning 14 nuclear sites across the UK and operating one hydro-electric power station at Maentwrog. These include:
- The largest environmental clean-up and demolition project in Scotland at the former centre of fast reactor research and development, Dounreay
- Eleven first and second-generation nuclear sites at Berkeley, Bradwell, Chapelcross, Dungeness A, Hinkley Point A, Hunterston A, Hunterston B, Oldbury, Sizewell A, Trawsfynydd and Wylfa
- Two reactor research sites at Harwell and Winfrith.
Hunterston B joined NRS on 1 April 2026 as the first advanced gas-cooled reactor site to be decommissioned. Hinkley Point B will follow in autumn 2026. Dungeness B, Torness, Heysham 1 & 2, and Hartlepool will join NRS as they are defueled over the next decade.
While decommissioning is the current task at hand, NRS is also working hard to future-proof the organisation by investing in its workforce, assets, communities, sites, and surrounding landscapes to ensure it leaves a sustainable nuclear legacy.

Berkeley site
Berkeley occupies a 27-hectare site of Special Scientific Interest on the eastern bank of the River Severn in Gloucestershire and was also home to the Berkeley research laboratories.

Bradwell was built on the edge of a former World War II airfield, one and a half miles from the Essex coastline.

Chapelcross was Scotland’s first commercial nuclear power station and was built on the 92-hectare site of a World War II training airfield in Dumfries and Galloway.

Dounreay was the centre of the UK’s research programme into nuclear fast breeder reactors for four decades, and is now a site of decommissioning, major construction and waste management as it dismantles one of the most complex and hazardous legacies of the 20th century.

Dungeness A site
Dungeness A occupies about a quarter of a 91-hectare civil nuclear site on the Kent coast in an area of Special Scientific Interest. It is a very exposed location on a shingle beach on the edge of the English Channel.

Harwell site
Harwell is located on a 91 hectare site in Oxfordshire and is the birthplace of the UK nuclear industry. Originally an RAF station, it became Britain’s Atomic Energy Research Establishment in 1946.

Hinkley Point A site
Hinkley Point A is located on 19 hectares on the Somerset coast.
Low carbon electricity generation ended in 2000 following 35 years of safe operation. Decommissioning began in 2005 when defueling was completed.

Hunterston A is located on 65-hectare site on a promontory off the Ayrshire coastline, 30 miles south-west of Glasgow.
Low carbon electricity generation ended in 1990 followed by defueling in 1995.

Oldbury site
Oldbury occupies 39 hectares on the bank of the River Severn in South Gloucestershire. The site moved into its decommissioning phase following the completion of defueling in 2016.

Sizewell A site
Sizewell A is located near Leiston in Suffolk and is a twin reactor site. The site became fully operational in 1966 and shut down on 31 December 2006 after 40 years of low carbon electricity generation. Decommissioning commenced in 2014 when the defueling phase completed.

Trawsfynydd site
Trawsfynydd is located on a 15.4 hectare site in Snowdonia National Park, North Wales, Trawsfynydd was the first inland civil nuclear station and drew its cooling water from Llyn (lake) Trawsfynydd.

Winfrith site
Winfrith is located on a 84 hectare site in Dorset. It was constructed in the 1950s to enable vital research into reactor design.

Wylfa site
Wylfa is located on a 50 hectare site on the north coast of Anglesey. It was the biggest and last of the first generation Magnox gas-cooled nuclear reactors to be built. Electricity generation ceased in 2015 bringing a safe conclusion to Magnox reactor generation in the UK.
